Knee Pain

Knee pain can be caused by injury, trauma, sports activity, or normal wear and tear with aging. The knee is one of the most complicated joints in the body, so any injury or overuse can result in chronic pain, as well as difficult and prolonged healing.

Causes of knee pain

The most common causes of knee injury can result in the damage or tearing of the ACL or PCL (anterior or posterior cruciate ligament). Additional injury can involve the medial or lateral meniscus or cartilage in the knee joint. Further damage can involve the medial or lateral collateral ligaments. The mechanism of injury may be changes in acceleration or deceleration (stopping or starting to quickly), sports injury during soccer, football, basketball, baseball, tennis, running, hockey, landing incorrectly, or a collision with another person, athlete, object, or trauma such as an auto crash. Even having your dog or pet pull you suddenly on their leash can damage your knee tissue.
